Overview

What Is Lipo-C + B12?

Lipo-C + B12 is a multi-ingredient lipotropic formulation of methionine, inositol, choline, and vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin or cyanocobalamin), commonly with L-carnitine added. The term lipotropic is older pharmacological language for substances that promote the breakdown and transport of fat out of the liver. Methionine is a sulphur-containing essential amino acid that acts as a methyl donor through the S-adenosylmethionine pathway, supporting phosphatidylcholine synthesis and one-carbon metabolism. Choline is a structural component of the phospholipids that move triglycerides out of hepatocytes as VLDL; 1950s human biopsy work in fatty-liver patients documented increased hepatic phospholipid synthesis after methionine or choline administration.

Inositol participates in cell signalling and blood lipid transport, and rodent deficiency models accumulate hepatic triglycerides. B12 is a cofactor for methionine synthase and methylmalonyl-CoA mutase, pairing mechanistically with methionine. L-carnitine shuttles long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria for beta-oxidation. The lipotropic mechanism is liver-centric rather than appetite-centric, and the one comparable randomised trial in 214 adults found a 0.9 lb additional loss versus placebo at three months, not statistically significant. The literature positions the class as a hepatic and methylation-support adjunct rather than a weight-reduction agent.

Published Safety Data

What the published studies measured.

What the studies show
Measured in clinical trials
  • Injection site soreness/redness: common, mild, self-limiting
  • Mild nausea or GI upset: minority of subjects, transient
  • Headache: occasional, usually first 1-3 days, resolves
  • Allergic reaction (rare): hives, swelling, breathing changes from any of the ingredients
  • Kidney strain with poor hydration: documented anecdotally in clinic literature; resolves with fluids
  • No documented serious AEs in the small literature available
