Overview

What Is Lipo-C (no B12)?

Lipo-C (no B12) is the standard lipotropic formulation of methionine, inositol, choline, and L-carnitine without the cobalamin component. The hepatic fat-handling mechanism is unchanged from the B12-containing version. Methionine is a sulphur-containing essential amino acid that donates methyl groups through the S-adenosylmethionine pathway and supports phosphatidylcholine synthesis. Choline is the phospholipid building block that loads triglycerides into VLDL for export from hepatocytes. Inositol participates in cell signalling and lipid transport, and L-carnitine shuttles long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria for beta-oxidation.

The lipotropic mechanism is liver-centric, acting on fat already mobilised, rather than appetite-centric, which is why the class shows minimal effect on body weight in controlled studies. Removing B12 leaves the lipotropic action intact while omitting the cobalamin cofactor for methionine synthase and methylmalonyl-CoA mutase. The B12-free formulation exists for contexts where cobalamin is already supplied by other means, where cobalt sensitivity is a concern, or where cyanocobalamin is specifically contraindicated, as in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy.

Published Safety Data

What the published studies measured.

What the studies show
Measured in clinical trials
  • Injection site soreness/redness: common, mild, self-limiting
  • Mild nausea or GI upset: minority of subjects, transient
  • Headache: occasional, usually first 1-3 days, resolves
  • Allergic reaction (rare): hives, swelling, breathing changes from any of the amino ingredients or preservatives
  • Kidney strain with poor hydration: documented anecdotally, resolves with fluids
  • No documented serious AEs in the small literature
