What Is Dermorphin?

Dermorphin is a naturally occurring heptapeptide isolated from the skin of South American frogs (Phyllomedusa genus). It is 30–40x more potent than morphine at the mu-opioid receptor due to its D-amino acid configuration (D-Ala at position 2), which confers resistance to enzymatic degradation. Research use is limited to analgesic pathway studies.

Research Context

  • Mu-opioid receptor binding affinity and potency studies
  • D-amino acid configuration and peptidase resistance research
